Firs Park Football Stadium (former home of East Stirlingshire F.C.) Video – July 2011

I’ve got mixed feelings about Firs Park on one hand I could class it as my favourite explore, it was relaxed and the weather was great. On the other hand we’d been to the stadium as a team two years prior and had watched a football match there, so to see it now lying in ruin was very depressing. The stadium is only small with only 200 seats and a capacity of 1,800. Having supported Clydebank, a team in the […]

Kelvingrove Park Bandstand – January 2012

Due to the inclement weather at the turn of the year we were unable to muster a proper explore for some time so we instead opted for more of a site visit. The Kelvingrove Park Bandstand was built in 1924 by the architect James Miller and was a popular venue due to its picturesque settings on the banks of the River Kelvin. (Click for larger image)   Passed by many a student, dog walker and jogger on a daily basis […]

Arrochar Torpedo Testing Station Video – May 2011

Back in May 2011, we visited the torpedo testing station in Arrochar. The place has had a colourful history, in 1915 a spy Augusto Alfredo Roggen was caught and hanged at the tower of London for taking photographs here. Here is an old map of the site, where sadly several of the buildings have since been demolished: “Test firing was carried out from submarines, from torpedo tubes built beneath the pier of the test facility, or from a modified vessel, […]

Glasgow Necropolis – January 2012

With the poor weather at the turn of the year we had no option but to plan for a visit to somewhere locally. The Glasgow Necropolis was always somewhere that I’d known and heard about but we’d never taken the time to visit, so we decided to pay a little visit there. Some of the architecture was incredible with several of the monuments and graves being very ornate. You can watch the video from our trip below. You can see […]

Torpedo Testing Station – Loch Long – May 2011

For an explore in May you’d expect, even in Scotland, that the weather would be fairly pleasant, but as always the weather loves to make our explores that slightly more interesting. The Torpedo Testing Station sits on the northern banks of Loch Long near to Arrochar and has long been left to rot by the military. 100 years old this year the station was closed in the 1980s. The Torpedo Testing Station can easily be missed when driving along the […]

Dalquharran Castle – April 2011

One thing to remember when planning an urbex explore, always have a back up!   Our original intended explore for that day was a no go thanks to some jobsworth of a security guard, so off we went further into Ayrshire in search of Dalquharrah Castle. After ditching the car we walked off through the fields to find the newer Dalquharran Castle (yes there are two of them!) and we weren’t disappointed as it came into view on the brow […]

Dalquharran Castle Video

Out exploring in April 2011, we actually went to visit Loudoun Castle theme park but after walking up to the front entrance we were swiftly turned away by angry security concerned we were going to pinch gardening equipment (despite having nothing but camera equipment in hand). So our backup for the day was Dalquharran castle (old and new). It was actually a really good explore with the sunshine beaming (a rarity in the Scottish climate). We first made our way […]

Pirniehall School – Guest Article

There where four of us set out to find Pirniehall School that day Myself, my partner Alan and a couple of photography buddy’s Norm and Nils, after a few wrong turns and getting a little bit agitated, we set off across the fields… over a fence through mud up to our knees almost and over another fence. Being careful not to be spotted from the house at the front we decided to do a little recce round the buildings first. […]

Lera Quarry & ROC post – Guest Article

I cycled off to glamis from kirriemuir initially to go to the glamis roc post (pics at the end) and while looking at the map I found a building in a disused quarry so decided to check it out, and i was rather surprised with what i found! (panorama of the building and surrounding area.) I casually migrated to the first thing i noticed as I put my bike down, an old television set. interiors: admittedly the junk dumped here […]

East Fortune Hospital – Guest Article

We drove down the road, the trees on the right hand side doing well to hide the buildings behind. Parking the car at the opening to the small group of houses near the hospital, we began to gather our equipment together and set out to find an entrance into the hospital. The buildings were surrounded by a high fence which seemed to be covered in rust and those overly common “Trespassers will be prosecuted” signs. Eventually we found a fence […]
