Yester Castle

When it comes to ruinous buildings on the Scottish landscape, is there anything more iconic than a castle? Take, for example, Kilchurn Castle. Mist dances around the stone walls whilst mountains strike up, disappearing into thick, grey layers of cloud and the black waters of Loch Awe lap against the shore. Poetic, sort of. I could go on and describe numerous castles in this way but I’d rather not. Sometimes the grandeur of a castle doesn’t come from its location […]

Buchanan Castle

Buchanan Castle is more of an early Scots baronial house than your typical Scottish castle and was built between 1852 and 1858. The castle briefly saw service as a hospital during World War II, and a hotel prior to that in 1925. The roof of the castle was removed in 1954 to avoid paying tax on the building which inevitably started the destruction of this once beautiful building. Now all that remains of the castle are its walls which are […]

Buchanan Castle Video – Abandoned Scotland

Buchanan Castle is a large house in Stirlingshire, Scotland, and serves today as the seat of the Clan Graham. Located west of the village of Drymen, the house was built by the 4th Duke of Montrose in 1854. The original structure, the ancestral seat of the Clan Buchanan, had burned down in 1852, and Montrose commissioned William Burn to replace it. Burn designed an extravagant manor in the Scottish baronial style, enclosing an L-plan tower in a clutch of turrets, […]

Britain’s Hidden Heritage – Dalquharran Castle

The BBC programme Britain’s Hidden Heritage featured Dalquharran Castle recently with some very interesting background information. It also had footage from the 70s when some of the flooring was still in place. It’s sister castle Culzean Castle stands proudly to this day with much of the interior remaining as it was when originally designed by Robert Adam, whereas Dalquharran Castle is a ruined shell of what it used to be. It’s a shame and shocking that the land owner was […]

It’s been a while since I updated the world section of the blog, so I’ve decided I’m going to trawl through YouTube every day and bring you one abandoned video from around the world. Today we start with the¬†Wonderland Amusement Park Chenzhuang Village, this is an explore by stuckincustoms on YouTube. The place looks absolutely amazing and it has been mentioned that it is like a fake Disneyworld. It’s to the north of Beijing and was only partially built before […]

Dalquharran Castle – April 2011

One thing to remember when planning an urbex explore, always have a back up!   Our original intended explore for that day was a no go thanks to some jobsworth of a security guard, so off we went further into Ayrshire in search of Dalquharrah Castle. After ditching the car we walked off through the fields to find the newer Dalquharran Castle (yes there are two of them!) and we weren’t disappointed as it came into view on the brow […]

Dalquharran Castle Video

Out exploring in April 2011, we actually went to visit Loudoun Castle theme park but after walking up to the front entrance we were swiftly turned away by angry security concerned we were going to pinch gardening equipment (despite having nothing but camera equipment in hand). So our backup for the day was Dalquharran castle (old and new). It was actually a really good explore with the sunshine beaming (a rarity in the Scottish climate). We first made our way […]
