Glenfarg Railway Tunnels – July 2011

For our first photos post we thought we would show off an older trip to Glenfarg Railway Tunnels from last summer which is still one of my favourites, possibly because I have a thing for railways and tunnels!

The tunnels are a stones throw from the M90 and are roughly half way between Kinross and Perth near to the town of Glenfarg. The old trackbed is now partially used by the motorway in some parts, with this line being another victim of the “Beeching Cuts” back in the 60’s.

There are in fact two tunnels at this location with both having a slight curvature in parts with the highlight of them being the two rusting cars sitting at the entrance to the first. We began our explore at this end and were eager to see the cars for ourselves.

The following shot was taken a good bit into the first tunnel with you being able to see the curve before the northern portal in the distance.

We continued through the first tunnel and wandered along the overgrown track bed for a good distance before coming to the second tunnel. Both were roughly of a similar distance in length with the northern portal of the second tunnel home to what looks like farming equipment which is going much the same way as the cars are.

This shot is looking back through the tunnel from the northern portal.

Along the length of both tunnels are small recesses in the wall which I believe were used to shelter in should you be walking within the tunnel and a train happened to grace your presence.

The day we visited here was easily the best weather we have ever had on an explore. The sun was splitting the sky and it was a shorts n t-shirt effort. Because it was so sunny we got some great light into the tunnels with a lot of the water within reflecting this further down.

One of the last things we noticed were small square holes which had been drilled into the tunnel walls at various points along the tunnel. It was nice to see them being used by the locals and to know the tunnels are certainly not going to waste.
